On alone time and what it can do for lessons on you...

I have been discovering this interesting thing I like to call
alone time.

Most of the people I know, including myself, don't spend a lot of alone time.
(Sitting alone in a coffee house doesn't count).

I used to really admire people who ate at restaurants alone.
I also admire those who spend a lot of time alone in the privacy of their own home but the thought of those things just made me uncomfortable for so long.
Perhaps I have never really gotten acquainted with myself.

Today I did just that.

I started off by working on Meganizing my kitchen.
What does that mean?
That means that everything is accessible.
Kitchen supplies shouldn't be hidden in cupboards.
They should be integrated into decor: pans hung on the wall,
measuring spoons dangling in the window sill,
utensils all at an arms reach.
Thus the first thing I learned about myself today:
I admire practicality.

I moved onto building us a temporary room for the week.
This includes an air mattress, an antique buffet table that we found in the house (which we will fashion as a dresser), clothes, a single piece of monogram artwork that I made for our new place, some candles, and a lamp sitting on a stack of books.
Home sweet home.
Thus the second thing I learned about myself today:
I can rough it! (thanks dad!)

After I finished cleaning the bathroom (sorry, no lessons learned there- except that I might have too many kinds of lotion). I decided to take a little break and pick up the graphic novel "Watchmen". I made myself some coconut truffle tea (YUM)
and realized something: no TV, no Ipod, no furniture except some lawn chairs and tiny end tables, no other person
... and I was actually having fun.
Thus the third thing I learned about myself today:
I am simple, and I should embrace the fact that I do not need an on/off switch to have a good time.

Matt will come home from work in about 45 minutes. I am excited to spend some time with him, but after today, I know that
I have many chick-flick marathons, decorating spasms, and dinner dates with myself in my future.

Happy alone-timing!
