There are a few things in this world that I feel are overpriced-
Lattes, trashcans, and candles are among them.
Candles typically burn straight down the middle and you are
left with a ton of unused wax and a small hole in your wallet.
I hate to waste something anything that could easily be restored.
Last year I discoved the candle making section at Hobby Lobby.
I tried making my own soy candles but it was a huge hassle
and when I factored in materials it was just as much as hitting
up Peir 1. I decided to make my own by recyling old candles I had around the house.
Thus easy candle re-making.
Find that old candle or candles that you were about to toss out.
Begin to boil water in a large sauce pan.
When the water begins to boil, set a smaller pot on top of the water to create a double boiler.
Set the candle into the smaller pot and turn the heat down to a simmer. Meanwhile, prepare the wicks (you can by the rope and anchors at any arts and crafts store). Tie one end of the wic and lace it through the anchor. You can add a little super glue to ensure it won't move around.
Once the wax has melted and your kitchen smells fantabulous,
begin dipping the wick into the wax a few times to make it sturdy. Now you are ready to glue the wicks into small glass votive holders.
You can also reuse votive holders. To remove old wax, just put them in the freezer for an hour and the wax will chip right off.
After you get the wicks anchored, you are ready to pour the melted wax into the holders.
I found that chopsticks work well for holding the wicks in place while the wax is hardening. After the wax is hard enough that the wicks stay in place, move the candles up to an open window.
After the wax has cooled and hardened, trim the wicks to 1/4 of an inch
and TADA... Let the mood-lighting begin!
